Pontcanna, Cardiff
The front room of this Edwardian terrace had been boarded up, carpeted and painted magnolia sometime in the 1980s. Underneath, almost everything original was still there.
The cast iron fireplace was uncovered behind a sheet of plywood, its green and cream tiles cleaned and the surround repaired. New painted alcove cupboards with oak shelves were built either side of the chimney breast to hide the clutter.
The pine floorboards were lifted, the broken ones replaced, and the whole floor sanded and oiled. The bay window sashes were overhauled rather than swapped for plastic.
