Bootham, York
The smallest room in this Georgian townhouse was a dark box nobody used. Instead of fighting the darkness, the owners leaned into it.
Every surface, from the ceiling to the skirting and the new built in bookshelves, is painted the same deep teal, so the edges of the room disappear. The old fireplace was opened up for a cast iron wood burner on a slate hearth.
A window seat under the sash, a rust velvet armchair and a brass reading light make it the place everyone heads for on a cold evening.
