Crickhowell, Powys
At the top of a sloping garden looking across to the Black Mountains, this small studio was built for an illustrator who needed north light and silence.
The outside is clad in charred larch, burnt black in the Japanese way so it needs no paint or treatment for decades. A huge single pane window frames the mountains, and a long north facing rooflight floods the drawing table with even light.
Inside, pale birch plywood lines every surface, with a wood burner in the corner for cold days.
