Leigh-on-Sea, Essex
The patio behind this 1930s house had cracked and sunk. In its place is a level composite deck with a pergola over the seating area.
Grey composite boards cover the whole terrace, with a black steel pergola over a corner sofa and festoon lights strung between the beams. Planters built into the deck soften the edges.
The deck sits level with the back door, so the garden feels like another room.
